Uvalde County
Uvalde County has a distinctly transitional topography, where the rugged southern edge of the Edwards Plateau gives way to the broader, lower South Texas plains. Its northern third belongs to the limestone Hill Country, with rocky uplands, dissected ridges, and canyoned drainage basins, while the county’s midsection is crossed by the Balcones Escarpment, producing a noticeable break in relief from higher plateau terrain toward gentler lowlands. Elevations generally descend from about 2,000 feet (610 m) in the north and northwest to around 750 feet (229 m) toward the southern plains, with the Nueces, Frio, Sabinal, and Leona rivers carving valleys and alluvial corridors through the landscape. Overall, the county presents a varied physical character: upland limestone hills and incised canyons in the north, rolling escarpment country through the center, and more open, subdued plains around and south of Uvalde.
